Symbiosis l can be viewed from two perspectives.
The first is as a sculpture. In my Symbiosis series, I am playing with the empty space formed by a structure and how changes to the structure alter the perception of that space accordingly. In Symbiosis l the structure is suggesting an embryonic space… the start of an idea… the potential for development. It is inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma, where an in-between empty space is the container of all its possibilities.
The second is as a functional piece where I am exploring the relationship between form and function. Does the added function of containing something physical change the perception of the piece from a sculpture to a vase? And, if so, is it still art, or is it is now a design or a craft piece?
By adding a possible function, my intention is to highlight that which is contained and to shift the focus from the container alone to the symbiosis between content and container.
